William Noel Hodgson MC (1893- 1916), Pen Name: Edward Melbourne Biography
William Hodgson published his poems under the pen name of Edward Melbourne. Born in England, William volunteered for the British Army when the First World War began, and served in the 9th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was awarded the Military Cross after holding a captured trench for 36 hours without reinforcements or supplies during the 1915 Battle of Loos. Hodgson was killed on the first day of the Battle of Somme whilst attacking German trenches near Mametz, and his remains now lie in a Devonshire Cemetary.
